Binge Watching Pros and Cons

Holaaaaa y’all! As you may or may not know I have been binge watching Dexter on Netflix over the last few weeks. As the show comes to a close I’ve been thinking about this whole binge watching thing and trying to decide if it’s better than the traditional style of watching one episode of a week. There are a number of pros and cons of binge watching …

Pro: You don’t have to sit and wait for the next episode to come along next week. If it’s a network show you also don’t have to deal with the network suddenly deciding to show a rerun one week before returning to the current season. This is great for impatient people like me who want to get on with the show and see how it all ends. Bonus: No cliffhangers! Just go onto the next show immediately!

Con: You don’t take time to really think about the show or analyze what just happened. You just immediately click “next episode” and plow through them without seeing some of the more subtle things going on during the show.

Pro: Binge watching allows you to remember some nuggets of information that are dropped early on but not revisited until later in the season. Sometimes shows like to drop little hints about different characters or situations, but you forget about the little things if you have to wait eight to twelve weeks to revisit them.

Con: You don’t really have time to identify with anyone other than the main characters. If you binge watch a show like Dexter you might finish all eight seasons and then say “Damn, they didn’t really do much with that Quinn guy” without realizing that actually did. You were just too busy rolling your eyes at the TV saying “Get back to Dexter and this dude he’s gonna kill!”

Pro: On the other hand, if there are characters or parts of the storyline that you don’t care for, you don’t feel you’ve wasted your time watching one episode. You just go on to the next. Shows often times have “filler” episodes where nothing is really done to advance the main plot of the season other than some tidying up and maybe fixing something that was going in a bad direction.

Con: TV loses its social element. Unless you’re watching the show at the same time and at the same pace with friends, family or coworkers you don’t get to stop and talk about the show. You don’t get other people’s perspectives on what has happened. You don’t get to speculate on what might happen down the road or predict how it all ends with others either. Even if you’re watching the show with someone else, by watching several episodes a day and getting through whole seasons in a week you don’t actually talk about the show in depth.

Pro: You’re more likely to finish the series. I really thought Dexter went off the rails late in season five and continued to do so in season six and seven. But, I had already invested so much time and energy in it that I was going to see it through. If I had to wait forty weeks after season six for the next season to start, I very well might have forgotten about the show or found something better to do.

Cons: You pick up on all the little things that can make a show annoying much more easily. You see them repeating storylines more easily. You see all the clichés and tropes that are used by bad writers to fill space. This starts to really get on your nerves and you might focus on those things (or certain characters you can’t stand) more than on the show itself.

Pro: You finally get to find out what the hoopla was about surrounding a certain show and will know what people are talking about when they reference it.

Con: You might find that it just wasn’t worth it.

Facebook is Worried About My Social Life

Holaaaaaaaaaa friends and lovers and all the lonely people out there tonight. I’ve been noticing a trend on Facebook lately. No, not all the bitching, bragging, winning, cheap shots, lame jokes and angry status updates people are posting. Those are a given. No, I’ve noticed that Facebook is worried about me. It seems as though Facebook is worried that I’m lonely and wants to help me out.

It all started out innocently enough. Facebook thought maybe I would like to join a singles site called Zoosk. They just wanted to let me know that I don’t have to be alone. Very sweet of Facebook.
After I didn’t respond to Facebook’s offer, they decided to get a little more specific for me. Next came the Christian Singles …

I have nothing against Christians, hell I am one, but let’s just say my views are a little more moderate than what I suspect I would find at that site. Besides, I’m not a raging racist and don’t hate gay people so I think I would have a hard time finding a match.

So, Facebook gave up on that and things took a strange turn. The next item on the Love Menu was Young Women Looking for Older Men! Whoa! That escalated quickly!

While I found this to be funny, I was still not tempted to dive into the online personals world. Also, that was a little unseemly. Facebook was not to be deterred however because they clearly did their homework and hit me with something they knew I wouldn’t be able to resist ….

Okay, so they finally had my attention, but I still wasn’t sure if it would be a good idea. I would have to come up with a personal bio to post and then put together an action plan for what to do after meeting a girl online. Not to worry though, Facebook thought of that too …

Okay, flowers are always a good idea. Girls always love flowers and when you pick her up for a date giving her flowers gets things off to a nice start. Of course, I have another problem …

Right! Gotta look good for that date right! But, there’s still another problem. I’m not much on going out. I prefer a more laid back casual evening …

There we go! Dinner and a movie at home! Damn Facebook! You’ve got my whole social life all planned out! Way to go and thanks!

What's Up With Jay Lately

Hola Y’all! I’m sure you are probably wondering what’s up with the old Jayman lately, so I thought I’d update you.

You know, weeks during the non-football playing parts of the year can be pretty slow and boring. Sure, there’s the NBA on Sunday’s (usually), but other than that, there isn’t crap on TV during the day or night until Mad Men comes on at 9 central Sunday. BTW, speaking of the NBA, it’s nice to see the refs are in “playoff mode” when it comes to helping the Lakers out in big games. The refs came up big for the Lakers making a couple of clutch no calls just when they were needed most.

Anyway, I watch NetFlix or HBO Go a lot on weekends. One thing about those two sites is that you kind of have to know what you want to watch before you get on there. Otherwise you can waste a ton of time scrolling through the different options and then not have time to watch anything. I prefer to watch TV series over movies. Nothing against movies but they just take too much commitment. TV shows or an HBO series are in half our or one hour increments which are much easier because I tend to lose focus after about an hour.

Saturday I tried to watch Bridesmaids. I watched the first hour and hardly even chuckled once. I guess the second hour is where all the funny is? Maybe I’ll go back and try hour two some other time. Which is my point about commitment, what ever happened to the 90 minute comedy? Two freaking hours of fart, poop and menstrual cycle jokes? I’ll pass.

I think I need to Tweet more. There are a lot of people who have no un-Tweeted thoughts. I should be more like them. Just Tweet things like “Damn that was a nice car.” Or “LOL .. People #Funny” and stuff like that. I follow this one chick, I probably shouldn’t put her full Twitter name here, (Redacted)DoobieFly who just Tweets whatever the hell is on her mind all day long. Normally that would annoy me, but for some reason she doesn’t.

What do you think she means by the “Doobie” and “Fly” part of her name? Maybe she’s a big Doobie Brothers fan and wants to be a pilot? Or a flight attendant? Or has always loved Wonder Woman? Yeah, I like the idea of Wonder Woman flying around in her invisible plane listening to the Doobies Brothers on the 8-track.

I need to get my haircut again. Actually, I needed to get it cut the day after the last time I got it cut two weeks ago. Man, that dude did a terrible job. I hope he’s making money off those Teat Party T-Shirts he sells cause I don’t think his barber skills are gonna pay the bills. I need to time this out so that I can also get my hair cut about week before Memorial Day so I’ll look at least semi-presentable when I see the family over in Yellville over Memorial Day Weekend. Anyway, my point is, don’t go to a barber because he’s never busy and you can get in and out quickly.

That same point probably goes for doctors too. I mean, if you walk into a doctor’s office and some dude in a white coat jumps up and grabs his stethoscope and a tongue depressor and is like “Come right on in! You’re next buddy!” you should probably run away as fast as you can. Although, I assume if you were going to the doctor you probably can run that fast anyway cause you’re sick, but you get the point.

And, uh, well, that’s pretty much it. As you can see I’ve been dealing with some pretty heavy-duty stuff the last few days.  Well, other than all the sadness and heartache. But, nobody ever wants to hear about that crap.

Also, just in case you didn’t get a chance to listen to Sunday’s “Local News” episode of IWS, you really should check it out. We covered wedding announcements, anniversaries, community events, Tea Party Rallies, local cover bands and oh so much more! Definitely give it a listen…
